Dear Members,

Pursuant to a meeting on 7.5.2012 between the Registrar of the High Court of Malaya, PDRM and Members of the Bar (representing the Bar Council, KL Bar Criminal Practice Committee and YBGK) pertaining to Remand Centres and Remand Proceedings in Kuala Lumpur, we have been informed of the following:-

1.There will be two (2) Remand Centres for Kuala Lumpur as follows:-

(a)Jinjang Remand Centre (currently operational)

The Jinjang Remand Centre will handle detainees from IPD Sentul and IPD Brickfields.
(b)Dang Wangi Remand Centre (will start operation on 1.6.2012)

The Dang Wangi Remand Centre will handle detainees from IPK KL, IPD Dang Wangi, IPD Cheras as well those detainees which are on transit for other states.

(Note: The phones and fax machines are located at the general office in the respective police stations. As such, members are advised to call and to follow up as to whether their letters has been brought to the attention of the presiding Judicial Officer)

2.Both Remand Centres will start remand proceedings at 11.00 am every morning. Members of the Bar are however advised to be present earlier should they wish to interview their clients.

3.Members will be allowed to use certain rooms (subject to availability) for interviewing purposes.

CLE Report : Seminar on Human Rights In Malaysia-Why You Should Get Involved

The CLE Sub-Committee organised a seminar entitled 'Human Rights In Malaysia - Why You Should Get Involved', on 18th May 2012. The Seminar was presented by Mr. Andrew Khoo Chin Hock from the firm, Messrs. Andrew Khoo & Daniel Lo at the Selangor Bar Auditorium. 43 participants attended the seminar which provided an overview of human rights in Malaysia. He discussed the role of the Malaysian Bar in upholding the cause of justice without regard to its own interests or that of its members, uninfluenced by fear or favour as well as the reasons why it is important for members of the Malaysian Bar to get involved in Human Rights

There was active question and answer session and as a token of appreciation, Encik Muhammad Hidhir presented a plague to Mr Andrew Khoo.

The evening ended with participants having light refreshments.
